Leave your personal life at the door…
This is probably one of the hardest things for me to grasp. You have to leave your personal life at the door when you walk into a law class. Your experiences in life and how you feel about a certain law do not make the law right or wrong. You have to simply look at the facts in front on you and based on THOSE FACTS ONLY decide if the court has made the right decision or not.
Today we were discussing in my property class the topic of a persons right to sell their organs or other body parts. Some people saw no problem with it - as someone who has seen a family member go through the process of needing and receiving a organ transplant I have very strong feelings toward organ donation. Lucky for me, the law is on my side in this - but it’s hard to not let my personal experience come into play while debating the cases and the topic at hand. I’m working on training myself to keep my brain on track with only using the facts I have in front of me, and not bringing in my outside information or experiences.
There is a lot of focus and discipline involved in being a law student. It’s a real test of my will power…
